Thunderstorms, heavy rain expected in 13 states and KL, Putrajaya and Labuan


PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds across 13 states as well as the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan, effective until 5pm on Saturday (Dec 13).

MetMalaysia, in a statement, said the severe weather is expected to affect Perlis; several districts in Kedah (Kubang Pasu, Padang Terap, Kuala Muda, Sik, Baling, Kulim and Bandar Baharu); Pulau Pinang; and multiple areas in Perak, including Kerian, Larut, Matang Dan Selama, Hulu Perak, Kuala Kangsar, Manjung, Kinta, Perak Tengah, Kampar, Batang Padang and Muallim.

A similar warning has also been issued for parts of Kelantan (Pasir Mas, Jeli, Tanah Merah, Machang, Kuala Krai and Gua Musang); Terengganu (Besut, Hulu Terengganu, Dungun and Kemaman); Pahang (Tanah Tinggi Cameron, Jerantut, Bentong, Maran, Kuantan, Bera, Pekan and Rompin); and Selangor (Hulu Selangor, Gombak, Petaling, Hulu Langat and Sepang).

Negeri Sembilan and Melaka are also affected, along with parts of Johor (Tangkak, Segamat, Muar, Batu Pahat, Kluang, Mersing and Kota Tinggi).

In Sarawak, the affected areas include Kapit (Kapit), Bintulu and Miri (Subis).

In Sabah, the warning covers Pedalaman (Sipitang, Tenom, Kuala Penyu, Beaufort and Nabawan); Pantai Barat (Papar, Putatan, Penampang, Kota Kinabalu, Tuaran and Kota Belud); Tawau (Tawau and Lahad Datu); Sandakan (Telupid, Kinabatangan, Beluran and Sandakan); and Kudat.

MetMalaysia issues these warnings when there are signs indicating a thunderstorm with a rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour that is imminent or expected to occur for more than one hour.

A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning that is valid for a period not exceeding six hours for any single release.
