Bazar Karat JB set for relocation to Jalan Syed Mohamed Mufti in 2026

JOHOR BARU: The iconic Bazar Karat JB at Jalan Segget in downtown Johor Baru, which was temporarily relocated to Jalan Duke, will be relocated again next year.

The night flea market would be moved to Jalan Syed Mohamed Mufti in mid-2026, approximately 1.6km from its current temporary site.

The Johor Baru City Council Mayor, Datuk Mohd Haffiz Azhmad, said it was part of the ongoing beautification and rehabilitation project in downtown Johor Baru.

“We would like to assure the Bazar Karat JB traders that they will remain in business and not be sidelined,’’ he said.

Mohd Haffiz said this when met after chairing the town hall session with the Bazar Karat JB traders at Menara MBJB on Wednesday (Dec 10).

The session was held to address issues impacting the traders following their relocation to the private parking space at Jalan Duke on Nov 25.

He said the night flea market also needs to be rebranded to keep up with the times, to continue attracting visitors and tourists.

He said the presence of Bazar Karat JB, which operates Tuesday to Sunday from 6pm until as late as 2am, helps make downtown Johor Baru “livelier after office hours”.

Mohd Haffiz said that there were 237 licensed traders at the night flea market, and between 40 and 50 unlicensed traders were also operating at Lorong Jalan Trus.

“We have plans to issue licenses to the unlicensed traders, in fact, some of them have been doing business at the night flea market when it first started in 2009,’’ he said.

Mohd Haffiz said the council would provide tents bearing the colours of the Johor flag, power plugs and lighting once the traders move to Jalan Syed Mohamed Mufti.

He said this was to ensure uniformity of the tents.

“Our men will erect the tents and dismantle them when the business hours are over and clean up the parking space,’’ said Mohd Haffiz.

He stated that the city council would discuss with Perbadanan Pengangkutan Awam Johor the provision of free shuttle bus services for visitors from the downtown Johor Bahru parking lot to Jalan Syed Mohamed Mufti.
