Sexual activity now main source of HIV infections in Melaka, says state Health Dept director

MELAKA: The pattern of HIV transmission in the state is undergoing a significant shift, with the majority of new cases now linked to sexual intercourse, including same-sex relationships, said the Melaka Health Department.

The department's director Dr Ruzita Mustaffa said the trend is emerging alongside a change in drug habits nationwide, as drug users are increasingly turning to synthetic substances instead of injectable narcotics.

She said this transition has led to a reduction in needle-sharing risks, placing sexual activity as the dominant source of new infections.

“A large number of current infections are related to same-sex sexual relations and this rise has been noticeable over the past five years, consistent with the national trend.

“Those most affected are adults aged between 25 and 60 who fall within the working population,” she said.

Dr Ruzita was speaking to reporters after the Clean and Safe Recognition (BeSS) presentation ceremony at Bukit Baru here that was officiated by Melaka Health, Human Resources and Unity Committee chairman Datuk Ngwe Hee Sem on Monday (Dec 1).

She said that although the overall number of cases hasn't surged drastically, the shift in transmission patterns must be closely monitored.

“We found that many infections involve sexual relations, whether gay or lesbian, similar to what has been observed in the national data,” she said.

However, Dr Ruzita stressed that the public must refrain from discriminating against individuals living with HIV, as not all are infected through such high-risk behaviour.

“Some of them are innocent and not at fault and this is why we emphasise reducing stigma while ensuring public awareness continues to improve,” she added.

Meanwhile, Ngwe said from January to October 2025, a total of 91 premises in the state successfully obtained BeSS certification.

“Among these were 15 school canteens and 76 food premises.

“Over the past three years, between 2023 and 2025, a total of 191 premises have been certified under BeSS,” he said.

Ngwe added that the Melaka Health Department will continue regular monitoring of BeSS-recognised premises to ensure ongoing compliance with safety and hygiene standards.
