Tropical depression near Terengganu not expected to impact Malaysia

PETALING JAYA: The earlier tropical depression detected off the coast of Terengganu is likely to cause no significant impact, says the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).

It stated that the storm was moving at 15 kilometres per hour and was about 213km northeast of Dungun, Terengganu.

"The storm may reach maximum wind speeds of up to 56 kilometres per hour but currently no significant impact is expected to Malaysia," it said in a statement on its social media channels on Saturday (Nov 29).

A tropical depression is the early stage of a tropical cyclone and is usually marked by rotating winds and cloud formations, but with relatively low wind speeds.

However, MetMalaysia advises the public to be prepared for episodes of heavy rainfall during the Northeast Monsoon.

It urges the public to stay alert to weather information, advisories, forecasts and warnings issued by MetMalaysia through its website www.met.gov.my.

Malaysians can also keep up-to-date using the myCuaca mobile application, MetMalaysia’s official social media channels and the MetMalaysia hotline at 1-300-22-1638.
