Loke says Rapid Rail disruptions fell sharply with proactive maintenance

KUALA LUMPUR: Rapid Rail network disruptions have fallen significantly this year with 25 incidents recorded as of August, says Anthony Loke.

The Transport Minister said this is down from 71 disruptions in 2024 and 118 in 2023.

Loke said strategic initiatives by Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd improved reliability and reduced technical faults.

“One main approach is more proactive and data driven maintenance,” he said.

He said Rapid Rail has introduced condition-based and predictive maintenance with smart sensors on critical components.

He said this allows risks of component failure to be predicted and repairs done before incidents occur.

Loke was replying to Syahredzan Johan (PH–Bangi) in a parliamentary written reply.

Syahredzan asked about strategies to prevent or manage prolonged disruptions similar to a recent incident in Singapore.

He asked whether Rapid Rail had studied those incidents to prepare for similar situations here.

Loke said Rapid Rail has set up a System Analytics Centre for real time monitoring of trains and infrastructure.

He added Rapid Rail has a Long Term Service Support agreement with original suppliers for spare parts and technical support and said the efforts draw on lessons from Prasarana, Rapid Rail and top international operators.

Loke cited SMRT Singapore, MTR Hong Kong and TRTC Taipei as partners.

He said the partnerships share best practices, operational experiences and joint technical training for local engineers.
