Thunderstorms and rain to hit 10 states, KL, Putrajaya and Labuan


PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds across 10 states, the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan, effective until 5pm on Tuesday (Aug 25).

In the northern region, the weather alert covers the entire states of Perlis, Kedah and Penang. In Perak, affected areas include Kerian, Larut Matang, Selama, Manjung, Perak Tengah, Bagan Datuk, Hilir Perak, Muallim, Batang Padang, Kampar and Kinta.

In the central and southern regions, severe weather is forecast for Selangor (Kuala Selangor, Klang, Kuala Langat, Petaling, Gombak, Sepang and Hulu Langat), WP Kuala Lumpur and WP Putrajaya. Negeri Sembilan will see storms in Jempol and Jelebu, while Johor is affected in Segamat.

On the east coast, the warning covers Bera, Rompin, Kuantan, Cameron Highlands, Maran and Pekan in Pahang.

Over in East Malaysia, the alert spans WP Labuan as well as several divisions in Sarawak, including Mukah (Mukah), Miri, Bintulu, Sibu (Selangau and Kanowit), Limbang, Kuching (Kuching and Bau), Sarikei (Julau) and Kapit (Belaga).

In Sabah, severe weather is expected in Pedalaman (Kuala Penyu, Beaufort, Membakut, Keningau, Tambunan, Tenom and Sipitang), Pantai Barat (Papar, Putatan, Penampang, Kota Kinabalu and Tuaran), and Sandakan (Kinabatangan).

MetMalaysia issues these warnings when there are signs indicating a thunderstorm with a rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour that is imminent or expected to occur for more than one hour.

A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning that is valid for a period not exceeding six hours for any single release.

The notice was officially issued by the department at 1.55pm on Tuesday.
