KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 2,357 police officers and personnel will be deployed in Putrajaya to maintain security and manage traffic during the 69th National Day celebrations, with some 80,000 visitors expected.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Fadil Marsus said comprehensive security and traffic control operations would be carried out for the National Day eve celebrations at Dataran Merdeka on Aug 30 and the National Day celebrations at Dataran Putrajaya on Aug 31.
"Police personnel will be stationed at strategic locations, public hotspots and major routes leading to the celebration venues to ensure public order, smooth traffic flow and the safety of visitors," he said in a statement on Tuesday (Aug 25).
Comm Fadil said police would also conduct crime prevention operations, focusing on hotspot areas and crowded locations around the capital.
"The Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department will manage traffic at several major public gathering points, including Dataran Merdeka, KLCC and Sunway Velocity, which are expected to draw large crowds on the eve of National Day," he added.
He said the preparations for National Day celebrations in Putrajaya had begun on Aug 25 and would continue until Aug 31.
"Members of the public were also reminded that Putrajaya is a no-drone zone and warned against flying drones without approval from the authorities during the preparations and celebrations.
“Firm action will be taken against those who fail to comply with the prohibition,” he said.
The Armed Forces will also conduct cannon salutes during the full rehearsal on Aug 29 and on National Day itself, he said.
"Two rounds will be fired at 8am during the full rehearsal at Lot 3C1, Precinct 3, while 14 rounds will be fired at the same location and time on Aug 31.
"Residents in Putrajaya and surrounding areas have been advised not to panic or become alarmed upon hearing the cannon fire," he said.
Comm Fadil said several roads would also be closed in stages for rehearsals and the main event.
"During the skeleton rehearsal from Aug 26 to Aug 28, there will be a full closure along Persiaran Perdana from Jalan Kemerdekaan to Lebuh Bestari.
"On Aug 28 and Aug 29, from 6am to noon, closures will affect Dataran Putra, Persiaran Perdana, Laman Perdana, Jalan P2a, Jalan P2t, Jalan P2s, Jalan P2w and Jalan P2y," he said.
A more extensive closure involving the Core Island area will begin at 5am on Aug 30 and continue until 6pm on Aug 31.
The affected routes include Jambatan Seri Wawasan, Jambatan Seri Saujana, Jambatan Seri Gemilang, Jambatan Putra and Jambatan Seri Ehsan.
Several other roads, including Lebuh Bestari, Lebuh Setia, Lebuh Saujana, Lebuh Gemilang, Lebuh Wawasan, Lebuh Sentosa, Jalan Tun Hussein and Persiaran Barat, will also be affected.
Police advised the public to plan their journeys, arrive early and use the free shuttle bus services provided.
Visitors were also urged to comply with all security instructions, avoid bringing prohibited or dangerous items and refrain from parking in restricted areas or locations that could obstruct traffic flow.
