Schoolboy hit by car at pedestrian crossing

KOTA KINABALU: An 11-year-old schoolboy was seriously injured after being hit by a car while using a pedestrian crossing in front of Sekolah Kebangsaan Darau in Menggatal here on Monday (Oct 26).

The boy suffered head injuries and was taken to a hospital in Likas for treatment following the 6.10am incident.

Kota Kinabalu OCPD Asst Comm Shahrudin Mat Husain said initial investigations found that the car, driven by a 69-year-old man, was travelling from Menggatal town towards CKS Menggatal.

He said the pupil had begun crossing the road from right to left at the pedestrian crossing when the car approached.

“Due to the short distance, the driver was unable to avoid the collision and hit the pupil in the right lane,” he said in a statement.

ACP Shahrudin said the case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

He urged anyone with information on the incident to contact investigating officer Sgt Mazlan Mursalam at 012-3036605 or the nearest police station.

“Police advise all road users to drive carefully and responsibly and obey traffic regulations for the safety of everyone,” he said.

A CCTV recording of the incident, which has been widely shared on social media, showed the boy getting out of a car on the opposite side of the road before walking towards the school.

He was crossing at the zebra crossing when he was hit by the car.
