PETALING JAYA: Action was taken in six cases involving illegal racing and speed trials during a special motorcycle operation along Jalan Raja Laut, Jalan Ampang and in Kuala Lumpur city centre on Sunday night (Oct 25).
The operation, which ran from 10pm to 5am, was conducted by the Kuala Lumpur JPJ in collaboration with JPJ headquarters in Putrajaya.
Kuala Lumpur JPJ director Hamidi Adam said nine motorcycles were also seized for investigation and further action.
"Of the six cases detected, two involved illegal racing and four involved speed trials. Action has been taken against those involved," he said in a statement on Monday (Oct 26).
During the operation, 35 vehicles were inspected, with enforcement action taken against 11 and 47 notices issued for various offences.
These included not having a valid driving licence, expired driving licences and motor vehicle licences (LKM), lack of insurance coverage and technical offences.
"Enforcement officers also detected vehicle modifications, as well as registration numbers and exhaust systems that did not comply with the prescribed specifications," he said.
Hamidi said the operation focused on enforcement under Sections 42A(1) and 42A(2) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
"These amendments provide a more specific legal basis to curb road hooliganism and dangerous behaviour that could threaten public safety and lives.
"Those convicted of a first offence under Section 42A may be fined between RM2,000 and RM10,000, jailed for up to two years, or both.
"For a second or subsequent conviction, the penalty increases to a fine of between RM5,000 and RM20,000, imprisonment for up to five years, or both," he said.
Hamidi said the Kuala Lumpur JPJ viewed illegal racing and speed trials on public roads seriously.
"Such activities are not only against the law but can also lead to serious accidents and claim the lives of innocent road users.
"Roads are not racing circuits. The thrill sought by a few should not come at the expense of the lives and safety of other road users," he said.
