MARANG: A male prisoner died after he was believed to have been beaten by three other inmates at a prison in the district on Monday (Aug 24).
Marang OCPD Supt Sofian Redzuan said police received a report on the case at 12.31pm the same day.
Initial investigations found that the incident stemmed from an old debt and the suspects' dissatisfaction with the victim.
The 38-year-old victim was pronounced dead due to a ruptured spleen, believed to have been caused by blunt force trauma.
"The victim, who was from Terengganu, was beaten in a room by three suspects aged between 21 and 35. He was then taken to the Merchang Health Clinic for treatment but was pronounced dead by a medical officer.
"The victim's body was sent to the Forensic Department of Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah (HSNZ) for a post-mortem," Supt Sofian said in a statement on Tuesday (Aug 25).
He added that the three suspects, also from Terengganu, had been detained for further investigation under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder. – Bernama
