PUTRAJAYA: Matters related to the constitutional amendments to limit the term of the prime minister and the separation of powers of the Attorney-General and Public Prosecutor have been presented to the Conference of Rulers, says Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil.
“Several matters were raised by Their Majesties, the Rulers, and the Prime Minister has directed Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said to discuss with the Parliamentary Special Select Committee which drafted the proposed constitutional amendment (Bill),” the Communications Minister, who is also the government’s spokesperson, said in his weekly press conference on Friday(Oct 16).
Following those discussions, any amendments or improvements will have to be brought back to the Conference of Rulers,” he added.
He said the process is still ongoing, as it involves major reforms.
Fahmi said that with the Parliamentary Services Act coming into effect, the jurisdiction of the August House now rests completely with the Parliamentary Services Council and the government no longer has authority over it.
“This fulfils one of the major institutional reform initiatives, and we believe it will allow democracy to continue to flourish in our country,” he said.
Certainly, during this transition, several matters need to be examined. The cabinet will continue to provide assistance where necessary to ensure that any outstanding issues are addressed,” he added.
Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul said on Oct 14 that the Council is slated to be formed by December this year.
The Council will comprise the Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat and the President of the Dewan Negara as well as selected lawmakers.
