TEMERLOH: The nation’s community of small traders and hawkers contributed RM652.4bil to the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP) last year, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
He added that the community also created 8.1 million job opportunities over the same period.
Anwar said that the community is the heartbeat of the economy and the people’s heroes who contribute to national development.
“These are the people on the frontlines every day, from morning markets to night hawkers, ensuring fair prices and reflecting the true spirit of commerce,” he said.
His speech was read by Pahang Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail, representing Anwar at the HPPK 2025 launch in Lurah Semantan on Sunday.
Also present was Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick.
He said the Madani Government is committed to expanding MSME participation through financing and capacity building programmes, adding that the target is 50% GDP contribution by 2030 under the National Entrepreneurship Policy 2030.
“The National Policy on the Development of Hawkers and Small Traders 2030 should be the principal policy and main guide,” he added.
Anwar said policy implementation must be swift and effective through the strategic role of the Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Ministry
He added that he appreciates the ministry’s initiative with Bank Rakyat via Program Jajahan Rakyat to expand digital access and cashless business.
He said the programme also provides more conducive business facilities.
“This initiative aligns with Malaysia Madani, ensuring micro entrepreneurs are not left behind in digitalisation,” he said.
Anwar added that the commitment continues through Budget 2026 focusing on capital injections and financing assistance.
He said it also strengthens access to international markets to empower MSMEs.
Anwar called on the public to appreciate the sacrifices of hawkers and small traders.
He said they work tirelessly for the continuity of the community’s economy.
