Tourism Ministry seeks broader tax relief for domestic travel, says Tiong

KUALA LUMPUR: The Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry will discuss expanding the special income tax relief for domestic tourism with the Finance Ministry, says Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.

He said the ministry hopes the incentive will cover accommodation at registered tourism premises and transport services.

“Motac appreciates the Government’s approval of RM1,000 individual income tax relief for domestic tourism spending,” he said on Thursday (Oct 30).

“However, we proposed including accommodation and transport to further encourage local travel,” added Tiong.

Tiong said tax incentives fall under the Finance Ministry’s jurisdiction.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim earlier announced the special relief to promote domestic tourism for Visit Malaysia 2026.

The relief currently covers entrance fees to local tourist attractions and cultural programmes.

Earlier, Malaysian Tourism Federation president Dr Sri Ganesh Michiel asked if hotel stays would be included.

“The tax rebate will encourage more Malaysians to travel domestically, especially families planning short getaways,” he said.
