A SUGGESTION to rename Lebuh Ampang as Chetti Street has been met with questions and objections, Makkal Osai reported.

MIC deputy president Datuk Seri M. Saravanan had proposed the name change during a recent Deepavali event as a way to honour the Nagaratthar or Chettiar community.

United for the Rights of Malaysians Party chairman Prof Dr P. Ramasamy said he did not agree with naming the street after the Chetti community.

The community’s history, nature of business and the impact it had on the community is highly nuanced, he said.

However, he argued that there are far more suitable Indian community pioneers who the street can be named after such as unionist, labour rights activist and the man known for making Labour Day a public holiday in Malaysia, Dr V. David.

Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa, who spoke at the same event, said Saravanan’s recommendation will be studied in depth before any decision is made.
