KUCHING: The former nurses’ quarters here will be redeveloped into a new Anjung Kasih facility to support families of patients at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH), says Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.

The Women, Family and Community Development Minister said the project was the second phase of the SGH Anjung Kasih initiative.

“In Kuching, phase one of Anjung Kasih is already available at SGH. We are thankful to the state government and Yayasan OBYU for their assistance in developing the second phase at this heritage building,” she told reporters during an Aidilfitri visit to a family at Kampung Tabuan Lot here on Thursday (March 26).

Anjung Kasih provides free temporary accommodation for families of patients at government hospitals.

It is an initiative of the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry, implemented by Yayasan Kebajikan Negara (YKN) with support from corporate sponsors.

Nancy said the Anjung Kasih project at the former nurses’ quarters involved renovating and upgrading the heritage building, thereby saving it from demolition.

She said YKN would handle the fittings and furnishings once the renovation is completed.

“We will determine the capacity of the facility after it is completed,” she added.

Nancy said there are currently 19 Anjung Kasih facilities nationwide.

She also said her ministry would look into providing mini Anjung Kasih facilities at rural clinics in Sarawak and Sabah to support patients receiving treatment such as dialysis.

“We welcome corporate sponsors to support the development of more Anjung Kasih facilities in Sarawak and Sabah, especially for patients in rural areas,” she said.
