JB school's special needs class temporarily shut due to influenza outbreak

JOHOR BARU: An Integrated Special Needs Class in SK Taman Permas Jaya 2 here has been temporarily closed due to an influenza A outbreak.

Johor education and information committee chairman Aznan Tamin in a statement on Thursday (Oct 9) said the temporary closure was implemented after the Johor Baru district office received a report.

He said five special needs pupils had tested positive for the viral respiratory infection while 15 other pupils were displaying symptoms.

He said the class would be shut from Oct 8 at 12.20pm until Oct 17.

He said the closure was implemented under Subsection 18(1)(f) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988.

Aznan said a teacher and a pupil management assistant also tested positive for influenza but six other teachers and two assistants were not infected.

"They are allowed to work as usual," he said, adding those infected with Influenza A would be quarantined for 10 days.

He also advised those with symptoms not to come to school until fully recovered.

Influenza A symptoms include sudden fever, cough, headache, muscle aches and fatigue, and is transmitted through respiratory droplets.
