PETALING JAYA: The Prisons Department will extend full cooperation to the police following the death of a 38-year-old inmate who was allegedly assaulted by fellow prisoners at Marang Prison on Monday (Aug 24).
The department assured that investigations will thoroughly examine the root cause of the incident and determine the involvement of all individuals linked to the case.
“The department takes this incident seriously and will provide full cooperation to the Royal Malaysia Police to ensure that the investigation is conducted comprehensively and transparently,” it said in a statement on Wednesday (Aug 26).
According to the department, duty officers acted immediately upon being informed of the assault by transferring the victim to Klinik Kesihatan Merchang for emergency medical treatment.
However, attending medical officers confirmed that the victim had succumbed to his injuries.
His body was subsequently transferred to Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital in Kuala Terengganu for a post-mortem examination.
The department urged members of the public to refrain from speculating or spreading unverified claims while police investigations remain underway.
“Any further developments regarding the incident will be announced from time to time based on information verified by the authorities,” it added.
