Perhilitan confirms two crocs sighted in Sg Perak

IPOH: The Perak Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) has confirmed the sightings of two crocodiles in Sungai Perak, near the Bagan Datuk jetty, on Monday (Oct 19).

State director Dr Pazil Abdul Patah said they were alerted to the reptiles’ presence by the Hutan Melintang Fire and Rescue Station at around 6pm.

"Following the report, the Perhilitan authorities conducted an investigation and monitoring at the incident location the next day to assess the safety situation in the surrounding area," he said in a statement on Friday.

On Thursday, locals and fishermen were also uneasy after a 3m-long crocodile was spotted near Kampung Pasang Api, Bagan Datuk.

Pazil said continuous monitoring will be carried out in the affected area

However, he said that there is no need to capture or relocate the two crocodiles as Sungai Perak is the natural habitat of the reptiles, calling such sightings normal.

“As a safety measure, the Wildlife Department will consider installing warning signs about the presence of crocodiles as a reminder to residents and visitors," he said.

In the meantime, he also advised local residents and the fishing community to prioritise safety by avoiding riverbank areas and not to disturb or provoke the crocodiles.

"Members of the public who see the reptiles should immediately inform Perhilitan for further action," he added. - Bernama
