Haze: High-risk groups must be given special attention, says Zahid

PETALING JAYA: Special attention must be given to high-risk groups including the elderly, children, pregnant women, and individuals with heart or respiratory conditions as haze affects several parts of the country, says Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He noted that hazy conditions are expected to persist during the ongoing Southwest Monsoon, which brings drier weather and reduced rainfall.

“In such circumstances, simple preventive measures can help reduce health risks,” he said in a statement on Wednesday (Aug 26).

Zahid urged the public to remain vigilant and take active steps to safeguard their health and that of their families.

“Always monitor the latest Air Pollutant Index (API) readings, reduce outdoor physical activities when air quality is unhealthy, and wear a suitable face mask if you need to be outdoors.

“Make sure to drink enough water and seek immediate medical attention if symptoms worsen,” he advised.

He also urged the public to rely on official channels such as the Department of Environment, Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma), and the Health Ministry for verified updates and health advisories.
