PKR Youth urges Akmal to raise Tabung Haji RCI concerns in Parliament

PETALING JAYA: Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh should raise any concerns over the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report on Lembaga Tabung Haji in Parliament rather than shift the focus after its findings were made public, says a PKR Youth leader.

PKR Youth information chief Danish Hairudin said Akmal had previously pressed for the report’s disclosure, but appeared to be moving the goalposts after the findings failed to align with his political narrative.

“The question is simple: must everyone follow Akmal and Umno’s instructions until we get the answers that Umno wants?” Danish said in a Facebook post on Wednesday (Aug 26).

Danish was responding to Akmal’s demand for the full truth to be disclosed, including questions over who was responsible for allegedly looting the pilgrim fund.

Akmal had also argued that the RCI report highlighted management weaknesses within Tabung Haji instead, calling for action against responsible parties.

Danish pointed out that the RCI was not established under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s administration and urged Akmal not to blame the current unity government if he was dissatisfied with the findings.

He emphasised that Umno, as part of the ruling coalition with representation in Parliament, should channel any alleged gaps in the report through proper legislative avenues.

“Tabung Haji does not belong to Umno, PKR or any party. It involves the money and trust of millions of depositors,” he said.

The RCI, which examined Tabung Haji’s management and operations from 2014 to 2020, was completed in 2022 and declassified on July 29.

The report cited governance lapses, "creative accounting" practices linked to hibah (dividend) payouts, and problematic investment decisions involving 14 companies, while recommending forensic audits.
