Anwar meets US trade representative Jamieson Greer

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim received a courtesy call from United States Trade Representative (USTR) Jamieson Greer on Thursday (Sept 25) morning.

Images shared by the Prime Minister’s Office show Greer, an American delegation and US Ambassador to Malaysia Edgard Kagan meeting Anwar.

“In this meeting, we exchanged views on strategic ties between the two countries and Asean, especially in trade.

“I stress that the interest of Malaysians and the US in concluding the reciprocal tariff agreement now being negotiated will also guide policy direction and planning for the business community of both countries.

“Malaysia, as a trading nation with an open economy, has always maintained good relationships with all trading partners, enabling domestic economic growth,” Anwar said in a Facebook post.

After the 30-minute meeting with Anwar at the PMO, Greer arrived at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (Mitec) in Hartamas, where the Asean Economic Ministers (AEM) meeting is being held.

Earlier, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said Malaysia is set to meet Greer later on Thursday (September 25).

Greer, who attended the AEM meeting on Wednesday (September 24), said the US hopes for more balanced and reciprocal trade with Southeast Asian nations.

He also said the US is expected to finalise some deals with certain Asean countries in the coming weeks.
