ALOR SETAR: Two men were arrested for allegedly riding dangerously during an integrated traffic operation in Kuala Kedah on Friday (Aug 7), says Asst Comm Syed Basri Syed Ali.
The Kota Setar OCPD said the suspects were detained after they were caught riding recklessly in a manner that could endanger other road users.
"The two suspects were investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987," he said in a statement on Sunday (Aug 9).
ACP Syed Basri said checks showed that both suspects had no previous record of criminal or drug-related offences.
He said the operation, conducted by the Kota Setar district police headquarters' Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division, was held along Jalan Padang Garam in Kuala Kedah from 4pm to 11pm on Friday.
"The operation was conducted following public complaints about illegal racing activities and various traffic offences in the area.
"A total of 47 officers and personnel were deployed to conduct checks and enforcement, particularly against motorcyclists," he said.
During the operation, police inspected 272 motorcycles and 247 individuals, resulting in 213 summonses being issued for various traffic offences.
These included 30 summonses for driving without a licence, 20 for expired licences, nine for failure to display a probationary licence, nine for non-compliant registration numbers and nine for failing to wear helmets.
He said another 30 summonses were issued for offences involving the absence of insurance coverage and road tax, while 58 were for modified exhaust systems, 17 for vehicle structural modifications and 31 for other offences.
He said police also seized 25 motorcycles under Section 64(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for various traffic offences, including structural modifications that failed to comply with regulations.
ACP Syed Basri said the suspects were brought before the Alor Setar Magistrate's Court at 9am on Saturday (Aug 8), where the court granted a one-day remand order to assist investigations.
