Malaysia delegation to meet US trade official on Sept 25

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is set to hold a meeting with the United States’ top trade official on Thursday (Sept 25), Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz confirms.

“We haven’t had our bilateral (meeting). It is this afternoon,” the Investment, Trade and Industry Minister said when met by reporters after the fourth RCEP Ministers’ Meeting here.

On Wednesday, Asean Economic Ministers held a consultation with the United States Trade Representative (USTR) Jamieson Greer.

Greer, who attended the Asean Economic Ministers (AEM) meeting on Wednesday, said the United States is hoping for more balanced and reciprocal trade with Southeast Asian nations.

“Over the past few months, under President Donald Trump’s leadership, I’ve had the privilege to have good conversations with many of you around the room on ways to improve access to our respective markets, remove non-tariff barriers, address unfair trade practices and strengthen economic and national security cooperation.

“President Trump and I are proud of the work we have done together on these deals and expect to finalise these agreements in the coming months or even weeks for some,” he said in his opening remarks during the AEM-USTR consultation on Wednesday.
