Zara Quairina inquest: Cops probing child witness info leak, several statements already recorded

KOTA KINABALU: Police have started gathering information and recording statements from potential witnesses who can help in the probe into leaked information pertaining to the ongoing Zara Qairina Mahathir inquest.

Kota Kinabalu OCPD Asst Comm Kasim Muda said following a report received on leaked information pertaining to child witnesses in the case at around 4.15pm on Sept 19, they have already recorded statements from the complainant.

He said they have also applied for an analysis from the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) for this purpose.

“At the same time, we are in the midst of getting statements from the prosecuting authorities and lawyers involved,” he said in a statement.

ACP Kasim said efforts to track down the suspects were ongoing, as they hoped to complete the investigations before referring the case to other related authorities for further action.

He warned the public against spreading or leaking information on children, specifically through social media platforms, as it is a serious offence which could lead to legal action.

“Be wary and more responsible with the information you might have on children for the safety and wellbeing of minors,” he stressed.

This case is being investigated under Section 203A of the Penal Code, Section 15 of the Children Act 2001 and Section 233 of the MCMC Act 1998, said ACP Kasim.

On Friday(Sept 19), lawyer Datuk Ram Singh told the Coroner’s Court that information on the child witnesses including his client were leaked on social media platforms.

It led the ongoing inquest into Zara Qairina Mahathir’s case to be postponed to Monday (Sept 22).
