Police simulation finds Zara Qairina’s fall position matches scenario without push

Media covering the inquest were also required to go through strict checks before entering the Kota Kinabalu Coroner Court room for Zara Qairina Mahathir's inquest.

KOTA KINABALU: A police simulation found that a fall in which she was not pushed most closely matched the position where student Zara Qairina Mahathir was discovered at her hostel block.

The fifth witness in Zara’s inquest, Sabah Police HeadquartersCriminal Investigation Department (D10) Insp Maidon Bernandus said the test was carried out at around 3am on August 3 at the scene.

He told the Coroner’s Court before Coroner Amir Shah Amir Hassan that the simulation was conducted with the investigating officer, four other D10 Sabah members, representatives from Papar district police, and the hostel warden.

“The simulation was carried out from the corridor near the third-floor toilet door using a mannequin weighing 10kg, fitted with additional weights to total 53kg, matching the victim’s estimated weight.

The mannequin was released in two scenarios: the first without being pushed and the second with minimal force,” he said.

He said the first simulation most closely matched the crime scene photo and the position in which the deceased was found on the ground of her dormitory block on July 16.
