AGC probing Shafie's remarks on Zara Qairina inquest

KUALA LUMPUR: The Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) is scrutinisng a statement by Warisan president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal linked to the Zara Qairina inquest for possible elements of contempt of court.

In a statement Monday (Sept 22), the AGC said it would not hesitate to take strict action within the ambit of law, including to initiate a contempt of court proceedings following its scrutiny.

Mohd Shafie had given a speech that touched on the inquest at an event titled "Jelajah Inspirasi DSSA P187 Kinabatangan" on Sept 20.

According to the AGC, Mohd Shafie's statement had potential to create inaccurate perception amongst the public, hence hampering the court proceedings that is currently ongoing.

"This department reminds the public not to create confusion or impair the flow of the court proceedings," it said.

Last week, the Coroner’s Court postponed its inquest into the death of Zara Qairina Mahathir after confidential information about a child witness was leaked online.

The ongoing inquest which entered its 10th day on Friday (Sept 19), was postponed at around noon until today (Sept 22).

Zara Qairina was found unconscious in a drain beside her hostel in the early hours of July 16 and died the following day at Queen Elizabeth Hospital from her injuries.
