PUTRAJAYA: From singing patriotic songs and reciting poems to dressing up as historical figures, children here are finding their own ways to celebrate the National Day.
For 11-year-old Nur Aminah Mohd Zahir from Perak, her favourite part of the celebrations was watching the National Day parade.
"The thing I like most about Merdeka is watching the parade on Aug 31," she said.
She said her school also got into the spirit of the celebrations with various activities, including a choir competition.
"I also recited an English poem about Beautiful Malaysia, which I memorised," she said, adding that she enjoyed receiving freebies and spending time with her family during the celebrations.
Also enjoying the festivities was 11-year-old Nur Qasnasuha Fatihah Mohd Sanie from Serdang Jaya, who said she had learned about the National Day and the meaning of freedom both at home and in school.
"I enjoyed this year's celebrations because my school had organised various activities.
"I participated in a fashion show where we had to dress up as a prominent figure. I chose Tun Fatimah," she said.
Her nine-year-old sister, Nur Syifaa Queraisya Mohd Sanie, also enjoyed the holiday by taking leisurely walks with her family.
"I also love getting free items here, like the flag balloons," she said.
Like her sister, Nur Syifaa also participated in a poem recital competition at school.
Eight-year-old Jane Tang said she understood that the special celebration marked Malaysia's independence and celebrated the country's multicultural society.
"I enjoyed attending the parade with my family. I was also excited to dress up in Jalur Gemilang colours with my sister," she said when met with her parents.
"I also liked the celebrations at school. I sang the new Merdeka song titled 'Aku Berjanji'," she said.
