IPOH: The 41-year-old woman who tried to hug Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah during the recent state-level National Day celebration will undergo psychiatric observation for a month.
Nurhaswani Afni Mohamad Zorki from Kampung Manjoi was ordered by Magistrate Mohd Harith Mohd Mazlan to be monitored at the Ulu Kinta Hospital Bahagia to see if she is fit to stand trial.
Prior to having the charge under Section 352 of the Penal Code read against the accused at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, deputy public prosecutor Nasrul Hadi Abdul Ghani told the court that Nurhaswani Afni was found to be schizophrenic.
“We need a report to determine whether she is fit to stand trial,” he said.
Nurhaswani Afni was charged with committing assault against Sultan Nazrin in front of the Ipoh Town Hall on Jalan Panglima Bukit Gantang Wahab on Aug 31 at about 8.20am.
The accused nodded when asked if she understood the charge but no plea was recorded.
If convicted, she could face a jail term of up to three months, a maximum fine of RM1,000 or both.
The court fixed Oct 8 for next mention.
During the incident, the accused allegedly rushed towards Sultan Nazrin on stage while the state anthem was being played and attempted to hug the Perak Ruler.
She was apprehended by security personnel before being led away.
Following this, Perak police chief Comm Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin revealed that the woman was found to have previous drug-related cases and is also under psychiatric supervision.
