A mother’s grief: Elephant stays by dead calf following crash with car in Mersing

MERSING: A calf that was hit by a car along Kampung Pengkalan Bukit Asli here has died, says the Johor Fire and Rescue Department.

Mersing fire station chief Mohd Alias Hussin confirmed that the calf had died in the accident in the early hours of Wednesday (July 1).

"The calf died in the accident.

"Its mother was lingering around the area for a long while after her child's death.

"We have informed the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) of the incident for further action," he said when contacted.

It was learned that the calf was later buried and the mother elephant was fitted with a monitoring collar before being released back into the jungle.

A heartbreaking video of an elephant sitting next to a seemingly dead calf has been making rounds on social.

In several other videos, the elephant could also be seen lingering around the area, causing heavy congestion as road users try to avoid the mammal.

It was earlier reported that a 31-year-old man was injured after his car hit an elephant calf and plunged into a 5m-deep ravine.
