IPOH: The Perak government has described the incident where a woman attempted to hug Sultan Nazrin Shah during the state-level National Day celebrations as a wake-up call to tighten security.

Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad (pic) said the matter was discussed at the state executive council meeting, where it was agreed that lessons must be learned and improvements made to prevent a recurrence.

"We accept responsibility. If there were loopholes in the event's organisation, we must acknowledge them since it happened during our programme.

"At the same time, we do not want to point fingers because it happened so suddenly, something we never imagined would occur," he said at a press conference after an empowerment programme for Tahfiz students here on Wednesday (Sept 3).

Saarani said that all events involving public figures – whether state leaders, celebrities or singers – must be treated with heightened vigilance.

He said the police were looking into safety issues, as well as methods to enhance security protocol.

"Sometimes, I feel uncomfortable with bodyguards because they make voters hesitant to approach me.

"But when there is a big crowd rushing to hug the Mentri Besar, for instance, bodyguards have to ensure my safety.

"We do not know the intentions of everyone who comes near us," he said.

Saarani also commended Sultan Nazrin for his composure during the incident.

"Despite what happened, Tuanku continued with the programme, accepted the salute and carried on as planned.

"After that, Tuanku even went down to greet the people," he said.

In the 8.20am incident on Aug 31, a 41-year-old woman rushed towards the Perak Ruler on stage and attempted to hug him while the state anthem was being played.

Police later arrested the woman.
