Perak Transit targets 10% to 15% cost savings through digitalisation, AI

Perak Transit said digital tools and AI would be used to improve driver and vehicle allocation, scheduling and operational planning.

PETALING JAYA: Perak Transit Bhd is targeting operational cost efficiencies of about 10% to 15% in selected areas of its fleet operations as it accelerates the adoption of digitalisation, artificial intelligence (AI), data analytics and connected technologies across its transportation and terminal businesses.

The group said the initiative, which will be undertaken through an existing subsidiary, is aimed at enhancing operational efficiency, optimising asset utilisation and unlocking additional value from its established transportation and terminal operations.

Perak Transit deputy executive director Jeffrey Cheong said the group had developed a strong operational foundation through its bus operations and integrated public transportation terminals, and was now looking to make greater use of technology, data and AI to enhance the performance of its existing businesses.

The initial focus will be on fleet management, operational planning, maintenance, fuel management and resource utilisation.

Among the key areas identified are fleet scheduling and dispatch, predictive and preventive maintenance, fuel and route analytics, and operational analytics.

Perak Transit said digital tools and AI would be used to improve driver and vehicle allocation, scheduling and operational planning, while data analytics would help identify potential maintenance requirements at an earlier stage to improve fleet availability and asset lifecycle management.

The group also plans to strengthen monitoring of fuel consumption, vehicle utilisation, route performance and operating patterns to identify areas for operational improvement.

The targeted cost efficiencies will be pursued progressively as the relevant digital and AI-enabled solutions are implemented and optimised across the group’s operations.

Beyond improving internal operations, Perak Transit is also evaluating a potential strategic partnership with a leading local industry player to accelerate the development and deployment of selected digital solutions.

The proposed collaboration remains at an exploratory stage and is subject to ongoing discussions, evaluation and the finalisation of mutually acceptable terms and conditions.
