IPOH: A woman attempted to hug Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, during the state-level National Day parade here on Sunday morning (Aug 31).

The woman, dressed in all black, was seen standing in a row behind the royals before suddenly rushing towards the Sultan from behind, but was quickly stopped by the guards.

A guard shielded the Sultan while others restrained the woman.

Perak police chief Datuk Noor Hisam Noordin stated that the police are investigating the incident.

“A 41-year-old local woman went up to the main stage during the state-level National Day celebration this morning while the Perak state anthem was being played.

“She entered from the side of the stage and approached His Royal Highness the Sultan of Perak before being stopped by security personnel on duty.

“The suspect was arrested on the spot and taken to the police station for further action,” he said in a statement.

Noor Hisam said initial checks revealed that the woman has a prior drug-related record.

He added that the suspect also has a history of psychiatric treatment and is currently under specialist supervision.

He added that a urine test conducted on her came back negative.

"We urge the public to respect the country's official celebrations and not to cause incidents that would spark public concern," he added.
