URA protestors gather outside Parliament again

KUALA LUMPUR: Over a hundred protesters against the controversial proposed Urban Redevelopment Act (URA) have gathered outside the gates of Parliament again as tensions rise ahead of the second reading of the Bill at Parliament on Thursday (Aug 28).

The protesters, which began their march to Parliament from Tugu Negara earlier in the morning, shouted demands for the Bill to be retracted from the second reading.

“Reject URA, reject Madani” rang out among the crowd as they carried banners and posters with similar demands before stopping their orderly march just before the entrance gates of Parliament.

The crowd was then met by a massive group of Perikatan Nasional MPs, led by Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin (PN-Larut), after a few hours of standing under the cloudy weather.

“We know the people want this law to provide fair compensation that must be properly handled by a responsible agency.

“But what is being proposed is just vague benefits without specifying who will oversee the process and that is why we will not agree,” Hamzah told the crowd.

He also said the Bill failed to address the needs of the minority who do not want to redevelop their residence, adding “This is not about who agrees or disagrees — what we want is justice for everyone”.

Hamzah then led the group of MPs back to Parliament while the protesters then dispersed shortly after.
