Protestors gather outside Parliament, oppose Urban Renewal Act

KUALA LUMPUR: A group of protestors gathered outside the gates of Parliament over the Urban Renewal Act (URA) on Tuesday (Aug 26).

Chants of “Reject URA” echoed as the protesters moved towards the Parliament gates before being stopped by police.

The protestors also carried various sign boards displaying the message “Kill the Bill”.

The protesters comprised members from various residential associations, which included the Kuchai Entrepreneurs Park (KEP) Low-Cost Flats Resident Action Committee and Kuala Lumpur Residents Action for Sustainable Development Association (KLRA+SD), among others.

The protesters aimed to hand over multiple memoranda either against or calling for changes to be made to URA before its planned second tabling later this week.

Upon reaching the gates of Parliament, MPs from both sides of the divide came to greet and join the group, also advocating for URA’s planned second reading to be delayed.

Among those from the government backbenchers side included Wong Chen (PH-Subang), Zahir Hassan (PH-Wangsa Maju), and Rodziah Ismail (PH-Ampang).

Opposition members included Datuk Dr Radzi Jidin (PN-Putrajaya), Datuk Idris Ahmad (PN-Bagan Serai), and Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan (PN-Kota Baru).

The rally continued for over two hours until Deputy Housing and Local Development Minister Aiman Athirah Sabu arrived.

She then received all the memorandums against URA from the rally’s representative, Gerakan Pembela Ummah (Ummah) president Mohd Zai Mustafa, with the rally goers dispersing shortly after.
