Gig workers rally at Parliament in support of Bill for better protection

KUALA LUMPUR: Over a hundred gig workers gathered at the gates of Parliament to show support for the Gig Workers Bill 2025 but left with hopeful hearts on Wednesday (Aug 27).

This came after Human Resources Minister Steven Sim met the group shortly after they gathered and revealed that the second reading of the much-anticipated Bill was scheduled for Thursday (Aug 28).

"We still face many obstacles as there are many people who have misunderstood, or have their own agenda, as they ask for the second reading to be postponed.

"But this Bill was not made solely behind my desk in my office but through direct on-ground consultation with all of you and other industry stakeholders to reach this point.

"If there is no resistance on Thursday, I hope to complete both the second and third reading in Parliament and finally put it to vote for it to pass," he said to the group.

Led by the Association for Land Public Transport Transformation president M. Nathan, the group then passed Sim a memorandum in support of the Bill before dispersing shortly after.

"There is no law to protect gig workers. Wages are inconsistent and job assignments are unfair which is why only traitors of the people would reject this Bill.

"I hope none of the MPs will reject this Bill as we gig workers in Malaysia deserve to gain freedom and protection," Nathan told reporters.

The Gig Workers Bill 2025, aimed at protecting the social welfare of gig workers nationwide, was tabled in the Dewan Rakyat for its first reading earlier on Monday (Aug 25).
