KOTA KINABALU: With the police saying that there are elements of bullying linked to the death of Zara Qairina Mahathir, the Attorney General's Chambers has been urged to prosecute any individuals involved.
A legal team representing Zara Qairina's mother Noraidah Lamat said this after Bukit Aman CID director Datuk M. Kumar said on Wednesday that police were now focusing on the bullying angle.
"If the above evidence is strong enough to taken court, we propose that the AGC prosecutes the individual or individuals who committed bullying under Section 507D(2) of the Penal Code.
"If the evidence is not strong or insufficient to constitute an offence under section 507D(2) of the Penal Code, further investigation will be needed to corroborate the evidence," said the lawyers in a statement on Thursday (Aug 14).
The lawyers also said that the police had also debunked claims on social media that family issues could have led to Zara Qairina's death.
Zara Qairina died at the Queen Elizabeth I Hospital here on July 17, a day after she was found unconscious near a drain next to a religious school hostel in Papar.
Kumar said that the post-mortem examination confirmed that the injuries Zara Qairina sustained were consistent with a fall.
Zara's death shocked Sabah and the country, with many calling for justice and the need to act against bullying in schools.
