SHAH ALAM: A total of 14 cases involving 14 Malaysians arrested overseas for drug trafficking were recorded between January and July this year, says Comm Datuk Hussein Omar Khan.
The Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) director said 11 of those arrested were men while three were women, aged between 19 and 55 years old.
“The cases involved the seizure of a total of 73.17kg of various types of drugs, with the total value estimated at RM5.519mil.
“By drug type, methamphetamine accounted for the largest seizure at 33,533.5g, followed by MDMA at 26,115.5g, cannabis at 6,400g, heroin at 6,118g and ketamine at 1,002g,” he said at a press conference at the Selangor police Headquarters here Tuesday (Aug 11).
Comm Hussein said Taiwan recorded the highest number of arrests with six cases, all of which took place at Taoyuan International Airport in Taipei.
“This was followed by the Philippines and Indonesia, with two cases each, while Hong Kong, Macau and the Maldives recorded one case each,” he said.
Meanwhile, Comm Hussein said statistics on cases and arrests at KL International Airport (KLIA) during the same period showed that 51 individuals were detained in 41 cases.
“Of the total, 36 were men and 15 were women, with the total value of drugs seized reaching RM96.9mil,” he said.
He said cannabis buds accounted for the largest seizure at KLIA, totalling 1,244.99kg, followed by methamphetamine at 13.99kg, cocaine at 7.86kg and ketamine at 1.32kg.
“Of the 51 arrested, 12 were Malaysians. We also arrested nationals from the United Kingdom, Singapore, France, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Japan, Thailand, Ireland, Slovakia, India, Portugal and the Republic of Uganda,” he said.
Comm Hussein said the statistics showed that airports remained among the locations being closely monitored in efforts to curb cross-border drug trafficking activities.
