Defence Ministry to fully cooperate with MACC over smuggling probe

KUALA LUMPUR: The Defence Ministry and the Armed Forces will extend their full cooperation over the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (MACC) investigation into several Army officers alleged to be involved with smuggling.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin (pic) said the ministry would not compromise on such matters.

"The ministry has no tolerance of such issues, more so if it undermines the safety of the nation," he said on Wednesday (Aug 13).

Khaled said no individual is above the law and urged authorities to carry out a thorough investigation to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

Armed Forces chief Gen Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar said the matter was still under investigation and that they would not conceal any details.

"Strict disciplinary measures and legal action will be taken if they are proven guilty," he said in a statement on Wednesday (Aug 13).

He also urged the public to allow authorities to conduct a comprehensive probe and to refrain from making any speculation that could affect the investigation, adding updates on the case would be provided from time to time.

It was previously reported that a smuggling ring operating in the south of the country was uncovered after the MACC arrested 10 individuals, including five senior military officers and an Indonesian national.

The arrests were made in the Klang Valley during the Ops Sohor operation at around 6.30am on Wednesday.

The syndicate was allegedly involved in smuggling contraband such as drugs and cigarettes.

The syndicate is believed to have been operating for five years, allegedly involving senior officers from the Armed Forces' intelligence unit as well as two former members of the same division.
