PETALING JAYA: Datuk Lawrence Low questions the necessity of forming another task force to investigate the fatal accident that killed nine Federal Reserve Unit policemen when the Malaysian Transport Safety Board (MTSB) already exists.
"Why must we form a new task force for every tragedy? How many such committees have been set up, and how many led to lasting improvements?
"The MTSB was envisioned as the central body to collect and analyse transport accident data, provide transparent investigations, and recommend policy reforms.
"But its absence in high-profile incidents shows a troubling lack of political commitment to road safety," the MCA vice-president said in a statement on Monday (May 19).
He pointed out that fatal accidents, often due to mechanical issues, continue to occur despite the Road Transport Department dubbing 2025 as a "year of enforcement."
"We urge Puspakom and the three newly appointed inspection companies to enforce tougher standards. No unsafe vehicle should be allowed on the road.
"Malaysia needs more than task forces. It needs a permanent, empowered, and transparent transport safety body," he said.
