Exco man calls for thorough probe, action over child's death in locked van


JOHOR BARU: Action must be taken if there was negligence in the death of a five-year-old boy in a school van here, says Johor executive councillor Aznan Tamin.

The education and information committee chairman said he was deeply saddened by the tragic incident in Taman Bukit Indah on Wednesday (April 30).

“I extend my deepest condolences to the family of Yu Zie. May they be given strength and perseverance during this difficult time.

“We are handing over the matter to the police to carry out a thorough and detailed investigation to determine the actual cause of the incident.

“If there are any elements of negligence or carelessness, I strongly urge that appropriate action be taken in accordance with the law, and any parties involved must be brought to justice,” he said in a statement on Friday (May 2).

On Thursday (May 1), Iskandar Puteri OCPD Asst Comm M. Kumarasan said police arrested the van driver at 2.40pm on Wednesday in the Bukit Indah area.

He said the boy was believed to have been left behind after the driver dropped off other children at around 7.30am.

The child was found unconscious around noon and pronounced dead at the hospital.

The case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for neglect or omission likely to cause physical injury to a child.
