Driver arrested after child found dead in school van


ISKANDAR PUTERI: Police are investigating the death of a five-year-old boy who was found unconscious in a school van outside a kindergarten in Taman Bukit Indah here.

Iskandar Puteri OCPD Asst Comm M. Kumarasan said the boy, a local child, was believed to have been left behind in the van after the driver dropped off other students at around 7.30am on Wednesday (April 30).

Police arrested the driver of the school van, a 56-year-old man, at 2.40pm the same day in the Bukit Indah area.

"The victim was found unconscious inside the vehicle at noon. He was later confirmed dead,” he said in a statement on Thursday (May 1).

“Initial checks found that the suspect has no criminal record and tested negative for drugs.

“He has been remanded for seven days until May 7 under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code,” he said.

The victim’s body has been sent to Hospital Sultanah Aminah for a post-mortem.

The case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for neglect or omission to care for a child in a manner likely to cause physical injury.

If convicted, the offender can be fined up to RM50,000, imprisoned for up to 20 years, or both.
