PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds across five states, effective until 1pm on Tuesday (Aug 25).
In the northern region, the weather alert covers the entire state of Perlis. Affected areas in Kedah include Langkawi, Kubang Pasu, Kota Setar, Pokok Sena and Padang Terap.
In the central region, severe weather is forecast for Selangor, specifically covering Kuala Selangor, Sabak Bernam, Hulu Selangor and Gombak.
In the southern region, the warning extends across the entire state of Melaka.
Over in East Malaysia, the alert covers Bintulu as well as Subis, Miri, Beluru and Marudi in Miri, Sarawak.
MetMalaysia issues these warnings when there are signs indicating a thunderstorm with a rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour that is imminent or expected to occur for more than one hour.
A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning that is valid for a period not exceeding six hours for any single release.
The notice was officially issued by the department at 9.40am on Tuesday.
