PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds across eight states, effective until 3pm on Tuesday (Aug 25).
In the northern region, the weather alert covers the entire states of Perlis and Penang. Affected areas in Kedah include Langkawi, Kubang Pasu, Padang Terap, Pokok Sena, Kota Setar, Pendang, Yan and Kuala Muda.
In the central region, severe weather is forecast for Selangor, specifically covering Sabak Bernam, Hulu Selangor, Kuala Langat, Sepang and Hulu Langat.
Further south, the warning covers the entire states of Negeri Sembilan and Melaka, alongside Tangkak and Muar in Johor.
In Pahang, storms are expected in Bera and Bentong.
Over in East Malaysia, the alert spans parts of Sarawak, including Bintulu, Selangau in Sibu, and Subis, Miri, Beluru and Marudi in Miri.
MetMalaysia issues these warnings when there are signs indicating a thunderstorm with a rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour that is imminent or expected to occur for more than one hour.
A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning that is valid for a period not exceeding six hours for any single release.
The notice was officially issued by the department at 11.30am on Tuesday.
