Work on new multi-storey car park in Old Town Ipoh to begin in May

IPOH: Construction of the RM15mil multi-storey parking and commercial complex at Jalan Panglima is set to begin in May, with completion expected within 15 months.

Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming announced that this initiative by the Ipoh City Council will be executed through a Private Financing Initiative (PFI) model by the private sector.

"This long-awaited project is expected to significantly ease the parking woes faced by the people in the Old Town area for the last 20 years," Nga stated during the groundbreaking ceremony on Friday (April 25).

Originally announced by Nga in January 2023, the complex will be located at the existing parking area behind the Han Chin Pet Soo (Han Chin Villa) building.

The design of the complex features colonial architecture to complement the historical buildings in the area. The Kepayang assemblyman mentioned that the complex would add 353 parking bays to the existing 378, bringing the total to over 700.

"The complex will consist of five floors, with 12 shop units planned to house a creative cultural gallery, local souvenir shops, cafes, and various food outlets, as well as an alfresco rooftop area, which is anticipated to be an 'instagrammable' spot," he added.

"This project will boost tourism in the Old Town area in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2026, injecting new life into this heritage town," Nga said.

Other features of the complex will include attractive LED lighting, solar panels, and electric vehicle charging points.

"This will make it one of the most beautiful car parks in Perak, especially at night," he said.

Additionally, the complex will offer disabled-friendly parking spaces, lifts, and toilets, along with other public facilities such as suraus and public toilets.
