Malaysian violinist, composer and producer Martin Looi has released a new album titled Velvet Alibi, marking what he describes as a bold artistic evolution while reaffirming his position in contemporary instrumental music.
The eight-track album, released on March 25, features contemporary reinterpretations of familiar songs such as Ella’s Standing In The Eyes Of The World; Golden from Netflix’s 2025 animated film KPop Demon Hunters, and Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill.
While incorporating recognisable elements, the album remains primarily an original body of work that places the violin at the centre of a darker, cinematic soundscape, departing from the brighter, pop-driven tones of Looi’s earlier releases.
"This album is about stepping outside of my comfort zone. I wanted to explore where the violin could go when paired with cinematic grit, and to find beauty in the darker corners of the sound I love,” Looi said in a statement to Bernama.

He described the concept of Velvet Alibi as "Refined Mystery”, combining high-fashion elegance with emotional depth through moody and atmospheric textures rooted in a cinematic contemporary instrumental style.
The album was developed in collaboration with his sister and producer Lav, while mastering was handled by the team at Studios 301.
Classically trained from a young age, Looi has built a reputation for integrating elements of hip-hop, R&B, pop and electronic music into his work, reimagining the violin as a modern lead instrument rather than a purely orchestral voice.
Beyond the studio, he has performed at major events and international stages, earning recognition for his technical precision and engaging stage presence, while continuing to push the boundaries of contemporary instrumental music.
