Woman and toddler killed in collision with pickup trucks

JOHOR BARU: A woman and a toddler were killed after the car they were travelling in, along with three other passengers, was involved in a collision with two pickup trucks.

Seri Alam OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said the accident occurred at Jalan Bestari, Ulu Tiram, near here, at around 3pm on Thursday.

He said the driver was heading towards Ulu Tiram town with four passengers when she attempted to make a right turn at the location where the incident happened.

“A 23-year-old man, who was driving a pickup truck from the opposite direction, collided with the right side of the vehicle,” said ACP Mohd Sohaimi in a statement yesterday.

The impact caused the car to spin, and it was struck in the rear by another pickup truck, which was emerging from Ulu Tebrau.

“The 58-year-old woman, who was trapped in the car and sustained severe head injuries, was pronounced dead at the scene,” he said.

ACP Mohd Sohaimi added that a one-year-old boy suffered head injuries and died while receiving treatment at Hospital Sultan Ismail.

The other passengers in the car included two women, aged 62 and 83, who are family members of the deceased driver, and a three-year-old boy.

All three sustained serious injuries and are currently being treated at the hospital.

“The two toddlers were under the care of the three women at the time of the accident,” ACP Mohd Sohaimi added yesterday.

The driver of the first pickup truck sustained only minor injuries, while the second truck driver was unhurt.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act.

Police are urging any witnesses to come forward and assist with the investigation by contacting 07-386 4222.
