Female passenger dies in Johor crash

BATU PAHAT: A female passenger was killed on the spot after the car she was travelling in was hit by a car driven by a man under the influence of drugs.

Batu Pahat OCPD Asst Comm Shahrulanuar Mushaddat Abdullah said the 59-year-old victim identified as Halimatul Sa’adiah Mohamed was in the car driven by her 29-year-old daughter when the incident took place.

He said they were heading towards Merlimau in Melaka from Johor Baru when the incident happened at KM119.5, Jalan Johor Baru-Melaka, Tanjung Labuh near here at 1.30am.

“Their car was hit by a car driven by a 24-year-old male in the opposite direction when he lost control of the vehicle, skidded and rammed into their vehicle,’’ ACP Shahrulanuar said in a statement.

He said the victim from Jalan Taman Merlimau Baru, Jasin in Melaka, suffered head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

ACP Shahrulanuar said the victim’s daughter also sustained head injuries and is being treated at Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital in Batu Pahat.

“Initial urine test found the male driver had tested positive for methamphetamine. He has been detained and will be remanded at the Batu Pahat court on Friday (April 4) for further investigation,” he added.

The case is being investigated under Section 44 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
