Three nabbed after high-speed chase in Kuching

KUCHING: Three local men were detained following a dramatic high-speed chase early Saturday (March 29) morning when police attempted to stop two suspicious vehicles on Jalan Green.

Acting Kuching district police chief Supt Merbin Lisa said during a routine crime prevention operation, officers tried to stop a four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle and a passenger car at about 3.20am.

However, both vehicles refused to comply and continued to flee, leading police to give chase.

“The pursuit continued into a nearby housing estate, where the driver of the 4WD vehicle suddenly made a U-turn and charged towards three police officers.

“In response, one officer fired a single shot at the vehicle, causing it to overturn,” said Supt Merbin Lisa in a statement on Sunday (March 30)

The police subsequently arrested three male suspects, aged 39, 41, and 43. Further checks revealed that two of the suspects had multiple previous drug-related convictions. The vehicle and various equipment believed to be linked to criminal activities were also seized.

During the incident, the 41-year-old suspect sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment at the hospital.

"He is reported to be in stable condition. All three suspects tested positive for drug use during a urine test," he added.

The suspects have been remanded until April 3 to assist investigations.

The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years’ imprisonment and a fine, as well as Section 6(1) of the Explosive Corrosive Substances and Dangerous Weapons Act 1958, which provides for a maximum sentence of two years’ imprisonment and whipping.

Supt Merbin said police are also actively tracking the red passenger car, which remains at large.

He urged the public with information regarding the incident to contact the Kuching IPD control centre at 082-244444 or Senior Investigating Officer ASP Chris Olsen at 013-8607572.
