MACC questioning continues for ex-PM in graft probe

PUTRAJAYA: Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob spent six hours at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters, but the questioning is not over.

The former prime minister will be back today to answer more questions over a corruption and money laundering case.

The 65-year-old, who was on medical leave until Wednesday, arrived at the headquarters at around 9.45am yesterday and waved to the press before going into the building. He was seen leaving at 3.13pm.

MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said that there will be a second session today.

“Yes, 9am tomorrow (Friday),” he told Bernama.

In a statement issued to the media later in the day, Ismail Sabri said he would cooperate with the authorities until the conclusion of investigations.

“Today (Thursday) I was present at the MACC headquarters to give statements. I will continue cooperating with the authorities,” he said.

Azam earlier said they would also record statements from 23 new witnesses in the ongoing investigations into the corruption and money laundering case linked to the former prime minister.

“They will be called in gradually over the coming days,” he said.

Previously, four former officials, including two with the title of “Datuk” had been remanded by the MACC on Feb 21, on suspicion of being involved in corruption.

Following investigations into the four senior officers, MACC seized RM170mil in various currencies and 16kg in gold worth nearly RM7mil from “safe houses”.

It is understood that MACC is investigating several cases, including one involving government spending of RM700mil for promotional and publicity purposes.
