DOE closing in on polluters of Melaka's Sg Lereh

MELAKA: Pollution incidents in Sungai Lereh here have become frequent affairs, with Klebang assemblyman Datuk Lim Ban Hong receiving 11 reports from November to March 1.

He said the longstanding problem poses a continued threat to the environment and the livelihood of local fishermen.

"This number (is on top of) similar reports from previous years, emphasising the severity and persistence of the problem," he said after meeting various authorities, including the Environment Department (DOE), here on Friday (March 14).

Lim said the DOE is looking into punitive action against those responsible but he declined to identify the source of the pollution as investigations and legal action are ongoing.

Lim said fishermen's incomes have suffered because of declining fish stocks in the area.

“Each time pollution occurs, the water also becomes murky, making it difficult for the fishermen to work,” he said.

He added that coordination efforts involving various stakeholders are also being carried out to curb further environmental degradation and prevent future pollution incidents.
